What Is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health-care practice that is based upon the fact that good health care depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system. When body structures such as cells and organs are functioning normally, a state of health or normal physiology exists. Chiropractors perform a very thorough exam, focusing mainly on spine, extremities, nervous and musculoskeletal systems, to evaluate structure and function and diagnose a patient's dysfunction most accurately.
Chiropractors believe that nerve pressure, or nerve reflex changes, can cause a disturbance to body functions, which leads to an increased susceptibility to disease processes or chronic disease. In addition, accidents, falls, stress, tension, overexertion, or other factors may not allow the spine to move properly within its normal range of motion. This can result in improper and or decreased motion, causing dysfunction at that level which may even cause irritation to spinal nerve roots directly.
While chiropractic is most known for the treatment of back pain, neck pain, and headaches, there are other areas that benefit from chiropractic care. There is a link between the body and the mind. While you don't have to tell your body to perform normal functions (such as digesting food, overcoming infection, using your lungs to breathe, or your heart to beat), if your body is at all compromised, it can have difficulty performing these unconscious tasks, even potentially those that help your body deal with stress. Stress can have an effect on your health both short-term and long-term. Chiropractic strategies of health management provide ways to relieve structural stress as well.
