Observations from an athlete’s recovery – Manek Mathur – SDA #1 in the World

October 2018 was pretty typical for Manek. The head pro of Manhattan racquet club was playing in a double’s tournament on the SDA pro tour (Squash Double Association). He was seeded as the top player, playing at his pinnacle, ranked #1 in the world.

Yet it did not remain “typical”. On a simple movement, that he has performed countless times for years, he ruptured his left Achilles. Season over? Yes. But it may have also been the end of his playing career.

After a long hard look in the preverbal mirror, Manek made up his mind…. A comeback would happen.

The journey was not easy. After surgery, long, hard, and painful rehab ensued. He also completed personal training to promote healing and strength but also to maintain and avoid any flow through compensations. Finally, the return to the court was the last piece. The piece in order to overcome the mental hurdle and conclude that “I can play this sport I have loved, without any fear”.

September 2019, the answer was resounding. Manek returned to the SDA pro tour at the Maryland Club and he and his partner Chris Callis, won in convincing fashion returning to their pinnacle. Dr. Wolk was in attendance!

This story has its happy ending, but many will not be able to understand the incredible journey that it was.

His journey provides an inside look at what is means to be an athlete and how health and wellness should be included in any athletes program regarding if it’s for injury recovery or injury prevention.

Please keep a look out for a video with Manek and Dr. Wolk discussing chiropractic and its role in sports and athletic performance.
